Illustrator Frank T. (Thayer) Merrill was born in 1848 in Boston. He
was the son of George William Merrill and Sarah Rose Alden. He was a
native of Dorchester and lived on Tremlett Street with his wife, Jessie
S. Aldrich, for many years. This old property was destroyed by fire in
the 1970′s.
Although Merrill was a prolific illustrator, very little is known
about his private life. We know that he studied at Boston Latin, the
Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Lowell Institute. He also traveled
abroad when he was a young man to study and visit the great museums of
Europe.

There are several old children’s books by Laura E. Richards handsomely illustrated by Frank T. Merrill. I have a copy of “Captain January”, and there are others listed as illustrated by Frank Merrill.
